Since everything was on Mechalle’s shoulders, she made sure her two sons got a good education and values from early on. Being an educator herself, she wanted her kids to excel in their academics.

My mom always encouraged me to join a lot of extracurricular activities, and keep me occupied, so maybe my mother’s the reason I was into a lot of that stuff, and a lot of that cultural capital I got from Wheeler High School.

The only advice I could give them when entering into the professional arena, they are going to be in for a rude awakening. They are going to see how nasty the entertainment industry really is.

Besides being a professor, Jaylen’s mother is a kind-hearted person who believes in giving back. And she is the one who instilled in Jaylen that being a basketball player was not enough for him. She always encouraged him to be a gentleman out of the court. Mechalle said she told her son,

Who you are is measured by the mark you leave on the world. And to truly leave a mark on the world, you have to do the right things, and speak out against the wrong things.

But in order to do that, you have to use your voice you have to back it up with actions,” she further told him.

Her constant push has led the basketball player to start a philanthropic foundation, The 7uice Foundation. Mechalle is also a part of the foundation. The foundation aims to bridge the opportunity gap for youth in “black and brown communities.”
